Tokyo-based Sasebo Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.(SSK) became a wholly owned subsidiary of Osaka-based Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. on October 1, 2014.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) announced it will book an extraordinary loss in the amount of 39,841 million yen in connection with two cruise ships for Aida Cruises, an affiliated company of Carnival Corp. in the consolidated financial results for the first half of fiscal 2014 ending March 31, 2015. MHI also booked an extraordinary loss of 64,126 million yen in its consolidated financial results for fiscal 2013.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has determined, effective October 1, 2015 to establish two new group companies at its Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works' Koyagi Plant - one (MHI Ship & Ocean Engineering Co., Ltd.) to undertake ship construction and the other to manufacture hull blocks - and to transfer its operations in construction of large-size commercial ships in the Nagasaki district to the new firms. The company will separate cruise ship construction from its commercial ship business and operate as an engineering business under a new organization to be launched within the Commercial Aviation & Transportation Systems business domain. No changes will be made in the structures of shipbuilding activities for commercial vessels at Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works and vessels for the Japan Ministry of Defense at Nagasaki Shipyard.

On October 30, 2015, MHI newly booked 30.9 billion yen as an extraordinary loss in its passenger ship sector, which has been booked a total of over 130 billion yen as a loss.

Japan Marine United (JMU) delivered the Nivaga III (1337gt, LOA: 60.50m, Beam: 12.60m, Depth: 6.00m, Pass: 320(international)/429 (domestic)) to Tuvalu government at port of Funafuti, Tuvalu on December 9, 2015. The ship was built at JMU Tsurumi Works, Yokohama, under a Japanese ODA (Official Development Assistance) programme. She will replace the existing Nivaga II, and will ply between Tuvalu and Fiji, and among domestic ports in Tuvalu.

On February 4, 2016, MHI newly booked 22.1 billion yen as an extraordinary loss in its passenger ship sector, which has been booked a total of over 160 billion yen as a loss.

On August 30, 2016, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) announced that it has entered talks with Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. toward forming new domestic alliances.

On October 1, 2016, Kawasaki Heavy Industries said it would consider a drastic revision of its shipbuilding business due to its retrograde profitability and indicated that it may withdraw from the business.

On October 18, 2016, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. announced that it will scale down its shipbuilding operations by withdrawing from the money-losing large cruise ship business. It will concentrate on building small & medium-size cruise ships and car ferries.

In May 2017, Osaka-based Sanoyasu Shipbuilding Corporation accepted an order of a car ferry for the first time in about 20 years, and will restart building car ferries at Mizushima Shipyard in Kurashiki in autumn of 2018. A 2,800gt car ferry for Nankai Ferry.

On June 14, 2017, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced that it reached a basic agreement with Oshima Shipbuilding. towards the formation of an alliance in the commercial ship business.

On April 1, 2018, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. will become a pure holding company, and change in business name to Mitsui E&S Holdings.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will set up three companies: Mitsubishi Shipbuilding (Yokohama), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Structure (Nagasaki), and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering (Yokohama) on January 1, 2018 to take over its "Industry and Infrastructure Domain" segment.

Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. agreed with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., the largest stockholder and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. to buy Minaminippon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. by April 1, 2018.

Fukuoka Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. bought Watanabe Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. on January 5, 2018.

On February 1, 2018, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding and Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding announced that both agreed to form a business alliance in commercial ship sector.

In April 2018, Fukuoka Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. bought Usuki Shipyard Co., Ltd.

On May 5, 2018, Mitsui E&S Holdings Co., Ltd. announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. signed a business cooperation agreement with TSUNEISHI Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., as of April 1, 2018.

In October 2018, Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding and Mitsui & Co. formed a new joint venture with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, one of the largest private shipbuilders in China.

Nichiyu Maru (10,083gt), a RORO vessel for Nitto Kaiun was completed at Naikai Zosen Setoda shipyard in January 2019.

On February 4, 2019, a RORO vessel, Kaioh Maru (13,559gt, LOA:190.00m, Beam:27.00m, Depth: 22.70m) took the water at Naikai Zosen Corporation's Innoshima shipyard.

On June 3, 2019, a RORO vessel, Tenoh Maru for Ocean Trans took the water at Naikai Zosen Corporation's Innoshima shipyard.

The first Japanese automatic ship powered only by a battery, "e-Oshima" (320gt) took the water at Nagasaki-based Oshima Shipbuilding Co Ltd. on June 12, 2019.

On August 29, 2019, Onomichi-based TSUNEISHI Facilites & Craft announced that it decided to build the HydroBingo (under 19gt, Pass: 80), the first hydrogen-powered domestic ferry, jointly developed with Compagnie Maritime Belge, a Belgian firm. Dual fuel hydrogen & diesel engines will be mounted. The HydroBingo will be completed in 2021, and is scheduled for entering on a domestic route in Japan.

Kegoya Dock Co., Ltd. will deliver a new car ferry, Trans Asia 20 (5,100gt, 1,200dwt, 98m long, Bus:22, Truck: 6, Pass: 740) to Trans Asia Shipping Lines, a subsidiary of Chelsea Logistics Holdings Corp. in the Philippines by the end of October, 2019. Her sister is expected to be delivered in April 2020.

On November, 2019, Mitsui E&S Holdings announced a business reconstruction plan. Mitsui E&S expects a group net loss of 88 billion yen for the 12 months through March, marking its third straight year in the red.

Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU) entered into a business collaboration agreement for their capital alliance and a joint-venture contract on March 27, 2020, and will establish Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., as a joint-venture company on October 1, 2020.

On November 2020, Sanoyas Holdings Corporation announced that it will sell all shares of its Sanoyas Shipbuilding Corporation to Shin Kurushima Dockyard.

On January 1, 2021, Nihon Shipyard was established in Tokyo by Imabari Shipbuilding and Japan Marine United.

On March 30, 2021, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries signed a transfer agreement of the new shipbuilding area at Koyagi Plant at Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works with Oshima Shipbuilding.

On April 23, 2021, Mitsui E&S Holdings announced that it had finally agreed to sell 49% of the shares of Mitsui E&S shipbuilding, its wholly owned subsidiary to Tsuneishi Shipbuilding on around October 1, 2021.

On May 31, 2021, Kure-based Kanda Shipbuilding announced that it will withdraw from its main shipbuilding business in January 2022.

On August 2, 2022, New Taima, a RORO vessel for Lienchiang County Government, Taiwan (5,400gt, LOA: 101.5m) took the water at Miura Shipbuilding in Saiki. She is expected to be completed in March, 2023.

Naikai Zosen delivered 'LADY SAMOA IV' car ferry (1,130gt) to Independent state of Samoa on October 29, 2022.

On December 27, 2022, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced that it had handed the new shipbuilding area at Koyagi Plant at Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works over to Oshima Shipbuilding.

On April 4, 2023, a car ferry for Taiwan, the Penghu (9,980gt, Length: 199.99m, Beam: 21.00m, Draft: 8.00m, Pass: 632, Car: 80, Bus: 4, Container: 10, etc.) took the water at Naikai Zosen Setoda shipyard. She is expected to enter service on the Kaohsiung-Penghu island route in September, 2023.

On November 3, 2023, Canada's Davie Shipbuilding completed the purchase of Helsinki Shipyard from Russia's Algador Holdings.

On February 14, 2024, Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering decided to stop taking new orders for commercial vessels.
